History
The history of Pura Tanah Lot Bali Indonesia based on the legend, narrated in the 15th century, Bhagawan Dang Hyang Nirartha or known by the name Dang Hyang Dwijendra undertook the mission of spreading Hinduism from the island of Java to the island of Bali.

In the history of Tanah Lot, told Dang Hyang Nirartha, seeing the sacred rays from the southern seas of Bali, Dang Hyang Nirartha searched for the location of the rays and came to a beach in a village called Beraban Tabanan.
At that time Beraban village was led by Bendesa Beraban Sakti, who strongly opposed the teachings of Dang Hyang Nirartha in spreading Hinduism. Bendesa Beraban Sakti, following the flow of monotheism.
Dang Hyang Nirartha meditated on a rock that resembled the shape of a parrot that was originally inland.
In various ways Bendesa Beraban wants to expel Dang Hyang Nirartha from his meditation place.
According to the history of Tanah Lot based on the legend Dang Hyang Nirartha moved the rock (the place of meditation) to the center of the coast with spiritual power. The rock is named Tanah Lot which means batukarang located in the middle of the ocean.
Since that incident Bendesa Beraban Sakti acknowledged the power possessed by Dang Hyang Nirartha by becoming his followers to embrace the Hindu religion along with all the locals.
Narrated in the history of Tanah Lot, before leaving the village Beraban, Dang Hyang Nirartha give a keris to bendesa Beraban. Keris has the power to remove any diseases that attack the plant.
Keris is stored in Puri Kediri and made a religious ceremony at Pura Tanah Lot every six months. Since this routine has been done by the villagers of Beraban, the welfare of the population has greatly increased with abundant agricultural crops and they live in mutual respect.
Legend
According to legend, this temple was built by a brahmin who wanders from Java, namely Danghyang Nirartha who succeeded in strengthening the belief of the Balinese population on Hindu teachings and building Sad Kahyangan in the 16th century. At that time, the ruler of Tanah Lot named Bendesa Beraben felt jealous of him because his followers began to go to follow Danghyang Nirartha. Bendesa Beraben then ordered Danghyang Nirartha to leave Tanah Lot. Danghyang Nirartha agreed, but before he with his power moved the Bongkahan Batu to the center of the beach (not to the sea) and built the temple there. He also changed his shawl into a snake guardian of the temple. This snake is still there today and scientifically this snake is a type of sea snake that has the characteristics of flat-tailed fish like, black color yellow and has toxic 3 times stronger than cobra. Finally it was mentioned that Bendesa Beraben became a follower of Danghyang Nirartha.
Renovations
Pura Tanah lot has been disturbed by abrasion and erosion due to waves and wind. Therefore, the Bali government through the Coastal Protection Project of Bali to install tetrapod as breakwater and strengthen the cliff around the temple in the form of artificial coral. The area around Tanah Lot is also arranged considering the role of Tanah lot as one of the tourist destinations in bali. The first renovation was undertaken in 1987 as a phase I protection project. At this stage, a two-ton (tetrapod) breakwater was placed in front of the Tanah Lot Temple. In addition, concrete slabs and artificial walls are also built as a surge protector. However, the laying of the tetrapod disrupted the beauty and natural beauty surrounding it so as to conduct a feasibility study involving religious figures and local communities in 1989. The design of submarine breakwater and artificial reefs was made in 1992 and renewed in 1998. Protection The temple began to take place around June 2000 and was completed in February 2003 through a Rp95 billion loan from Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The entire work includes building Wantilan, Pewaregan, Paebatan, Bentar temple, the arrangement of parking areas, as well as the arrangement of roads and parks in the lot lot.
Location
Lot land attraction located in Beraban, Kediri, Tabanan, about 13 kilometers south of the city of Tabanan.
To the north of Pura Tanah Lot, another temple built on a cliff that jutted into the sea. This cliff connects the temple with the land and is shaped like a bridge (curved). This temple is called Pura Karang Bolong.
